This is the single idea that explains every rule that follows. The hard surface of a phone or a lens might be tough, but sitting on top of it are functional layers measured in nanometers, and those layers are what your cloth and your cleaner actually touch.

Laptop panels are usually plastic, not glass, and that changes everything. Glossy panels scratch more easily than a phone. Matte panels carry an anti-glare layer with a microscopic texture that traps loose fibers, which is exactly why a paper towel makes a matte screen look worse.

If you don’t have a lens cloth handy, a clean general-purpose microfiber cloth is a perfectly safe choice, and a far better one than a paper towel or the corner of your shirt. It won’t scratch coatings, and it will lift the fingerprints.
