How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter
1. Locate the Dishwasher Filter
To begin cleaning, remove the bottom dish rack to gain access to the dishwasher’s filter. The filter is typically found on the interior floor of the machine.
Most filters are circular in shape and are designed to lock into place with a twist mechanism. In some dishwasher models, there may be an additional flat filter located underneath the primary cylindrical filter.
Take a moment to inspect the area and understand how the filters are set up so you can easily remove and clean them.
2. Remove the Filter
Once located, twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise to unlock it from the base. Be gentle but firm as you turn, making sure not to apply too much force to avoid damage.
After unlocking, carefully lift the filter out of the dishwasher. If your model includes a flat secondary filter beneath the main one, remove that as well, ensuring both components are ready for cleaning.
3. Soak and Scrub the Filter
Prepare a cleaning solution by filling a sink or large bowl with hot water and adding a few drops of dishwashing liquid, preferably one with degreasing properties to help break down oily residue. Submerge the filter components in the soapy water and allow them to soak for several minutes.
Soaking it will loosen any trapped food particles or grime. After soaking, use a soft-bristled brush, an old toothbrush, or a scrubbing sponge to gently scrub the filters, paying special attention to any crevices where debris may be stuck.
