How to Clean and Organize Dog's Supplies

How to Clean and Organize Dog's Supplies

Like children, having furry friends comes with a lot of gear—from toys and grooming tools to feeding accessories and bedding. Keeping these items clean and organized can often feel overwhelming to stay on top of it all.

Let’s discuss some practical steps to clean and organize your dog's supplies efficiently. Whether you're a new dog owner or a seasoned pet parent looking for better ways to manage your dog's things, these tips will help you create a cleaner, more organized environment that benefits both you and your dog. Let's dive in!

1. Gather All Pet Items

Collect Everything

The first thing you’ll need to do is go through your entire home and gather all your dog's toys, grooming tools, food and water bowls, leashes, collars, bedding, and any other items.

Sort Items

Separate all items into categories such as toys, grooming supplies, feeding accessories, clothing, and health care products. You can also create a Discard and a Donate pile.

2. Clean Toys and Accessories

Soft Toys

Wash machine-washable toys in a laundry bag with pet-safe detergent. For toys that can't be machine-washed, clean them with a mixture of detergent and warm water.

Hard Toys

Soak hard toys in a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar for about 30 minutes, then scrub them with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly. Dry them off with a microfiber towel or allow them to air dry.

Leashes and Collars

Wash nylon or fabric collars and leashes in warm soapy water. For leather items, use a leather cleaner and conditioner.

Grooming Tools

Clean brushes and combs by soaking them in soapy water, then remove hair and debris. Sanitize them with a pet-safe disinfectant.

3. Sanitize Feeding Accessories

Bowls and Feeding Stations

Your furbaby’s food bowl is prone to bacteria and germs just like ours are. So it’s important to wash food and water bowls daily with hot, soapy water. Run them through the dishwasher once a week for a deeper clean.

Storage Containers

Clean storage containers for food and treats regularly to prevent mold and bacteria buildup. Wash in detergent and dry with a dry microfiber. Then wipe down the exterior with a damp microfiber cloth and pet-safe cleaner.

4. Clean and Refresh Bedding

Beds and Blankets

Pet bedding quickly becomes stinky and soiled, especially with outside pets. Wash bedding and blankets in the washing machine with pet-safe detergent. Use hot water to kill any pests like fleas or mites. Dry thoroughly either on high heat in a dryer or leave it out in the sun to prevent mildew.

Crate Pads

For crates, remove and wash pads according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Clean the crate itself with a mild soap and water solution. Wipe dry with a clean and dry microfiber towel.

5. Organize Pet Items

Storage Solutions

Keeping your pet’s items organized will make your life a lot easier when it comes to caring for your furbaby. Use clear bins, baskets, or drawers to store different categories of items. Label them for easy access.

Designated Spaces

Create specific areas for feeding, sleeping, and playing. Keep items related to each activity in their designated spaces to maintain organization. Using existing drawers and cabinets or buying furniture specifically for storing your pet’s items will ensure your items stay organized.

Hooks and Hangers

Install hooks near the entryway or in your mudroom for leashes, collars, and coats. This keeps them handy for walks and outings, and also prevents you from bringing them into the home where they can bring in dirt and debris from outside.

Toy Rotation

In the same way children can get bored of toys, so can pets. So store some toys out of sight and rotate them weekly to keep your dog engaged and prevent clutter.

6. Maintain Cleanliness and Order

Regular Cleaning

The best way to maintain your dog’s belongings is to set a routine. This could include cleaning your dog’s items, such as washing bedding weekly and cleaning toys bi-weekly. Do what works for you and your schedule to ensure you’re staying on top of it.

Check Expiry Dates

Regularly check the expiry dates on food, treats, and medications. Discard anything that is expired.

Pest Control

Inspect items for signs of pests like fleas or ticks, especially bedding and grooming tools. Treat as necessary with pet-safe products.

7. Create a Care Schedule

Grooming

Wash your pup regularly to keep his coat and skin healthy and clean. Also schedule regular grooming sessions with professionals, or if you prefer to DIY, keep all grooming supplies in one organized area.

Feeding

Maintain a consistent feeding schedule and keep a list of your dog’s favorite foods and treats to avoid running out. You can even sign up for a pet food subscription for convenience and to ensure you never run out of food.

Health Check-ups

Keep a calendar for vet appointments and medication schedules. You can use a good old calendar or diary, the calendar in your phone, or use an app. Store health records and vaccination information in a dedicated folder.

8. Involve Your Dog

Training

Dogs are smart, so why not train them to put away toys after playtime. This not only helps keep the area tidy but also provides mental stimulation for your pet.

Rewards

Use organized storage to easily access kibble, goodies, and rewards during training sessions or for daily treats.

Create Order Out of Chaos For Your Furry Friends

By following these steps, you can ensure that your dog's items are clean, organized, and easily accessible, creating a healthier and more enjoyable environment for both you and your pet. An organized space not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also significantly contributes to your dog's well-being.
