Best Floor Cleaners to Use with Microfiber Mops

One of the greatest benefits of using microfiber for cleaning is that its innate cleaning power is fantastic when used with just water so you don’t need to add a chemical to ensure you’re removing dirt and germs. This isn’t just true for microfiber cloths; it also applies to microfiber mops!

The Spruce named our 18" Professional Microfiber Mop the best overall mop for 2021. Their product tester said, “I was skeptical about how well this mop could clean using just water. Even after going around the room, the mop pad didn’t look that dirty. However, when I rinsed the pad out, it was like a mudslide coming out of the microfiber fabric.” Although it’s not necessary to add a cleaner when mopping with microfiber, we’re often asked what cleaner we recommend being used with our mops. Check out our recommendations below.

When Choosing A Cleaner

The first things I tell our customers looking for a cleaner is to make sure that it’s safe for their flooring. Most flooring manufacturers and installers will have a product that they recommend. What might work great for a hardwood floor might not be ideal for ceramic tile so those professional opinions are a great place to start. Also, it’s important to choose a cleaner with a neutral pH. These cleaners are less likely to do any damage to your surfaces and usually don’t require any sort of rinsing so they’re safe for your pets and family as well.

Hardwood Floors

For hardwood floors, both solid and engineered, we recommend Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. This cleaner is residue free so you don’t have to worry about streaking, stickiness or build-up. It’s safe for use on unwaxed and finished wood flooring. It dries quickly and is not harmful to pets or people.

Stone Floors

For stone flooring, we recommend Black Diamond Stoneworks Limestone and Travertine Floor Cleaner. This product is specifically designed for limestone, travertine, porous natural stone, marble, slate and is also great for polished concrete. It will not strip the protective coating or leave a residue and with regular use can enhance the natural colors in your stone.

Vinyl Floors

For vinyl flooring, including plank flooring and luxury vinyl, we recommend Rejuvenate High Performance Luxury Vinyl Tile Plank Floor Cleaner. This cleaner is residue free and will not leave streaks on your floors.

Tile Floors

For ceramic and other tile flooring, we recommend Armstrong Once and Done Resilient & Ceramic Floor Cleaner. This cleaner requires no rinsing, doesn’t leave a residue, and is safe for grout.

Conclusion

While our top recommendation for a floor cleaner is still water and microfiber, whichever product you choose, be sure you’re following the manufacturer’s instructions, especially since a lot of cleaners are concentrates and require dilution and using them “straight” can damage your floors. The key to keeping your floors in their best shape is to maintain them by frequently dust mopping. To learn more about how to effectively mop your floors, check out our best practices here!
